MAC The Matte Lip Collection: Pictures, Swatches, and Reviews

By  |  10 Comments

If I had to play favorites among the seasonal makeup collections, my pick would definitely be autumn. Sure, the Philippines doesn’t have four seasons in a year, but that doesn’t stop me from enjoying a lot of the beautiful fall makeup releases… especially the lipstick shades from MAC The Matte Lip Collection!

MAC The Matte Lip Collection is MAC’s Fall 2014 release, and it consists of lipsticks, lip pencils, and blush. I bought just four lipstick shades from it since the rest of the items were too similar to a lot of colors I already have (not to mention from the same brand’s fall release last year, too). Okay, I may have absolutely adored the entire MAC Retro Matte Collection from Fall 2013, but I’m not quite certain if it’s a good thing that they nearly cloned it for the year after.

Scroll down to read my reviews and to see more photos!

P.S. Speaking of MAC Retro Matte Collection, I actually bought all items but one lipstick and one lip pencil color from it on the day of its launch last year… I just never got to reviewing them. I should go and do that while it’s still in season, no? They’re mostly permanent shades anyway! 😆

The MAC La Vie En Rouge is described as a “bright orange coral” with a matte finish on the MAC website. It came off on me as something with a bit of a strawberry pink and orange coral blend, which reminded me of the Lime Crime Velvetines in Suedeberry. It’s deeper, cooler, and less orange in terms of color, less matte in terms of finish, and much more comfortable in terms of wear compared to that, though. It also made the teeth appear a bit yellowish because of its warm tone.

MAC The Matte Lip Collection: MAC La Vie En Rouge Review Summary

Packaging: 5.0/5.0
Pigmentation: 5.0/5.0
Application: 4.5/5.0
Wear: 5.0/5.0
Longevity: 5.0/5.0
TOTAL: 4.9/5.0
  • Packaging: It came in the standard black and silver MAC lipstick tube.
  • Pigmentation: It’s very pigmented and opaque but has a very slight hint of sheen to it. It also didn’t fade by the slightest bit even after dabbing my lips with tissue twice, so if you want it to appear completely matte on your lips, pat it with tissue after applying.
  • Application: It tugged a bit on my lips during application but it was easy to apply overall. It didn’t leave uneven splotches of color and one swipe guaranteed an even coverage.
  • Wear: It felt matte but it wasn’t drying, and it wore very comfortably and barely settled into lip lines.
  • Longevity: It lasted around 6 to 7 hours on my lips without needing reapplication, and despite eating and drinking.

The MAC Fashion Revival is described as a “deep raspberry” with a matte finish on the MAC website, and it’s my favorite out of all the four colors I got (probably the most matte, too). In my opinion, nothing says “autumn” better than a berry-toned lip (or a berry-themed makeup look)! I loved how its cool tone made my teeth look really white, BTW!

It also kind of resembles a number of shades I could think of from the top of my head. First, the MAC Rebel (my all-time favorite MAC lipstick shade), except that’s lighter, more plum, and satin-finished. Second, the MAC RiRi Heaux, except that’s also lighter (even lighter than MAC Rebel) and more matte. Third, the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Damned, but that’s a tad more pink, less plum, and more matte. Lastly, the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Train Bleu, but that’s much darker, more violet, and very matte. Do I love and know my berry shades or what!? 😆

MAC The Matte Lip Collection: MAC Fashion Revival Review Summary

Packaging: 5.0/5.0
Pigmentation: 5.0/5.0
Application: 4.0/5.0
Wear: 5.0/5.0
Longevity: 5.0/5.0
TOTAL: 4.8/5.0
  • Packaging: It came in the standard black and silver MAC lipstick tube.
  • Pigmentation: Very VERY pigmented. One dab on the lips gives a nearly opaque coverage already, and like MAC La Vie En Rouge, dabbing my lips with a tissue twice after application didn’t cause it to fade at all. It just made it more matte.
  • Application: I had a bit of a difficulty applying this compared to all the other shades I got because it initially tugged on the lips the most. One mistake would need a makeup remover because of how pigmented it is. It still applied evenly, regardless.
  • Wear: It didn’t bleed outside the lips and it barely settled into lip lines. It also wore very comfortably like MAC La Vie En Rouge.
  • Longevity: It lasted around 6 to 7 hours on my lips, too, but it probably would have lasted longer if I didn’t eat and drink as much.

The MAC Nouvelle Vogue is listed as a “soft blue pink” with a matte finish on the MAC website. I think it’s a perfect everyday shade for all you pink lipstick lovers out there, although I can’t really classify it as an MLBB (my lips but better) color. It came off to me as a much cooler and less matte version of MAC Mehr, another one of my MAC favorites.

May I just tell a short story on how I had to go through so much trouble to get my hands on this particular shade? I got this reserved at the MAC store at SM Mall of Asia way back when I was still in Egypt, but days before I was going to get it, I found out from my MAC MUA friend that someone took and sold it (along with my MAC Pander Me reservation) on her day off! I was so pissed! She got me another reservation from MAC Rockwell, but the night before I planned to go and pick it up from there, I found out from an online reseller that she had stocks of it so I got it delivered to my house instead. Yay! 😆

Pigmentation: 5.0/5.0
Application: 5.0/5.0
Wear: 4.5/5.0
Longevity: 4.5/5.0
TOTAL: 4.8/5.0
  • Packaging: It came in the standard black and silver MAC lipstick tube.
  • Pigmentation: Like the other shades, it had impressive pigmentation and gave an opaque coverage.
  • Application: It was a breeze to apply. It glided effortlessly on the lips and the color payoff was rich and even.
  • Wear: It wasn’t drying and it didn’t feather outside of the lip. It did settle into lip lines after some time, but it wasn’t too obvious unless you look at it up close.
  • Longevity: It still looked very opaque after four hours and started fading after five, but I think it could have lasted 5-6 hours if I wasn’t drinking coffee while testing it out.

MAC Pander Me was described as a “soft peachy mocha” on the MAC website, and it could qualify as an MLBB or nude shade for people with darker skin tones. It’s a perfect lipstick color for a subdued school or work day look as it’s very subtle and it would look good with pretty much any other shade you choose to put on your face. It greatly reminded me of MAC Cherish, a lighter satin-finish version of it.

Packaging: 5.0/5.0
Pigmentation: 5.0/5.0
Application: 5.0/5.0
Wear: 4.5/5.0
Longevity: 4.0/5.0
TOTAL: 4.7/5.0
  • Packaging: It came in the standard black and silver MAC lipstick tube.
  • Pigmentation: It’s very pigmented and comes off opaque on the lips even with just one swipe.
  • Application: This was probably the easiest to apply out of all the four shades. It didn’t tug on the lips at all and it was very forgiving with committing mistakes because of its neutral color.
  • Wear: There was no feathering or bleeding outside of the lips and it wasn’t exactly drying, but it just didn’t feel as comfortable and lightweight on the lips as the others. It also settled into lip lines the quickest.
  • Longevity: It lasted around 3 to 4 hours on my lips, and unlike the other colors, it faded the easiest because of drinking and eating. Without eating or drinking, though, it probably would have lasted around 4-5 hours.

NOTE: I wore and tested all of the shades over the MAC Prep + Prime Lip, as I do with all matte shades. If you’re having problems with getting matte lip colors to look good and stay put on your lips, I suggest you give that a try!

Were you able to score a few colors from this collection or were you disappointed that almost all the shades were easily dupable? What are your thoughts on them? Feel free to leave a message on the comment box below! :)

They’re such perfect everyday colors, don’t you think? Fit for almost any occasion, too! You should go check out your local MAC counter for them. 😉

I had my eye on only 1 lipstick from this line (styled in sepia), but after going to 4 mac counters I still couldn’t find it hahahuhu. I should make friends with the MUAs but they’re so intimidating haha.

I would LOVE to see your lipstick collection!

That’s too bad! :( It’s such a pretty nude shade and I’m sure it would’ve looked good on you (I stalked you a little before replying LOL). Maybe try MAC Cherish/MAC Peachstock blended with MAC Double Shot? They’re all permanent shades and I have a feeling they’d end up looking pretty close to MAC Styled in Sepia when blended! And regarding the MAC MUAs… the ones I’ve met are such lovely people. I’ve made friends in so many branches already! I’m sure they’d be as nice to you as they are to me.

Anyway, I’d love to show you my lipstick collection too! I’ll be making a post on my vanity desk soon since I just reorganized it. It’ll be like a sneak peek. :)

I feel bad for not getting any of the colors. I wanted to get Pander Me but when I got to the MAC store, it was already sold out :(

They’re not that unique so they’re not worth feeling bad about! I love the shades I got but after putting more thought into it, I realized I actually could’ve skipped the shades because I had similar ones, anyway. I’m sure something new (and similar) would come along. :)

      Thanks for dropping by, BTW!

This came out when I was weaning off of MAC. I’m an absolute matte lipstick addict. I would’ve gotten Fashion Revival (because I want a color like Rebel in matte formula) and Pander Me (because I’m venturing into colors I haven’t tried before.

I wish they make some of these permanent, like they did with the retro matte.

Go for NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Damned, then! It’s pretty close to Rebel and it’s matte. :)

My friend from MAC actually just told me a few days ago that a bunch of these colors will be released as permanent shades, so that’s a wish granted! 😆

Lovely colors! At the time, I was only interested in Styled In Sepia so it was the only one I swatched (but eventually didn’t buy). Wish I swatched the rest of the collection!

It’s not too late! They’re making a bunch of these colors permanent shades, so you can still come back for them next time. 😉
